I was a newly divorced mother with two young children when I painted this piece. We’d just relocated to Southern CA and I didn’t even know my way around town. When I’d finished this painting I realized that it was very descriptive of the turmoil and emotions of going through divorce and starting a new life.

Tessera is essentially an inner self-portrait. She sits in a protective pose, nude and vulnerable yet determined to grow free. Her skin is both the color of blue death and the rosy bloom of new life. She is unaware of her newly forming wings — wings that represent freedom. Hidden, subtle orbs within the piece suggest the circle of life. Tears were shed while I painted this and those tears are represented in the drips and runs created at the top edge that run and create her hair.
